BJJ in High Schools - Clear Path Jiu Jitsu
Building Stronger Students Through Jiu Jitsu
Clear Path Jiu Jitsu is a school-based Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program created to help young people build confidence, resilience, discipline and respect — both on and off the mats.
As a sister organisation of Humble Fightwear, Clear Path shares the same belief that Jiu Jitsu is about far more than learning how to grapple.
It can change the way a young person handles adversity, interacts with others and sees themselves.
Today, Clear Path Jiu Jitsu has delivered programs across a number of Western Australian high schools, including Armadale Senior High School, Rossmoyne Senior High School, Girrawheen Senior High School and Canning Vale College.
But nowhere has the impact been more evident than at Armadale Senior High School.
From Student Engagement Program to School Subject
Clear Path began working with Armadale Senior High School with a simple goal: use Jiu Jitsu to reach students who weren't always connecting with traditional approaches to school.
The program combines Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training with mentoring, discipline, routine, teamwork and positive role models.
What started as a targeted student-engagement initiative grew into something much bigger.
Following the success of the program, Armadale Senior High School incorporated Jiu Jitsu into its school curriculum as a formal subject, giving students the opportunity to choose Jiu Jitsu as part of their education.
For a secondary school of Armadale's size, it represents an important step forward in recognising how martial arts can be used as an educational and student-development tool.
Students learn takedowns, positional control, escapes, submissions and self-defence.
But these aren't the most important lessons.
Every session creates opportunities to develop:
-
Resilience — learning how to remain calm and keep working when placed in difficult situations.
-
Confidence — achieving things students may previously have thought were beyond them.
-
Respect — for training partners, teachers, coaches and themselves.
-
Discipline — understanding that improvement comes through consistency and effort.
-
Problem solving — making decisions while under pressure.
-
Teamwork — learning how to help others improve rather than focusing only on yourself.
-
Emotional control — managing frustration, stress and adversity in a safe environment.
-
Leadership — encouraging students to become positive influences among their peers.
The aim isn't simply to create better Jiu Jitsu practitioners.
It's to help create better young people.
Creating Change Beyond the Mats
One of the most rewarding parts of Clear Path has been seeing changes carry over into everyday school life.
Students who previously struggled with engagement or behaviour have developed stronger relationships with teachers and other students.
The program has seen improvements in areas such as school engagement, attendance and behaviour, while students who once needed guidance themselves have grown into young people willing to challenge poor behaviour among their peers.
That transformation is at the heart of Clear Path.
Jiu Jitsu provides students with structure and accountability, but it also gives them somewhere they can succeed.
For some students, that first success happens on a Jiu Jitsu mat.
From there, confidence can begin to spread into the classroom and the rest of their lives.

From the School Mats to Competition
Some students have taken their Jiu Jitsu even further.
Students from the Armadale program began representing their school at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions around Western Australia and interstate.
In 2024 alone, eight Armadale students competed across six tournaments and collectively earned 16 medals and trophies.
Students who entered the program with little or no martial arts experience have gone on to become successful competitors, including state-level champions and national championship medallists.
For us, the medals aren't the most important part.
What matters is what they represent. The confidence to enter. The discipline to prepare. The resilience to compete.
And the courage to put yourself in a situation where you might win or lose. Those lessons last much longer than any medal.
Learning From a UFC Champion
One of the most memorable moments for students in the Armadale Senior High School program came when Perth's own Jack Della Maddalena stepped onto the mats to teach a class.
Jack went on to become the UFC Welterweight Champion, reaching the highest level of professional mixed martial arts and becoming one of the most successful combat-sports athletes Western Australia has produced.
Having an athlete of Jack's calibre spend time teaching the students was about much more than learning techniques.
It gave students the opportunity to train with someone who started his own martial arts journey as a young person in Perth and ultimately reached the pinnacle of the sport.
For the students, it was a chance to see firsthand where dedication, consistency and years of hard work can lead.
Experiences like this are an important part of what Clear Path is trying to create.
We want students to be surrounded by positive role models who demonstrate that success isn't given — it is built through showing up, working hard, learning from setbacks and continually improving.
For a group of high-school students standing on the mats at Armadale, having a future UFC champion teaching their class showed just how far the martial arts journey can go.
A Different Way to Connect With Students
Not every student responds to the same teaching environment.
Some young people need another way to connect.
Jiu Jitsu creates that opportunity.
On the mats, status disappears. Students quickly learn that progress is earned through effort, consistency, patience and the willingness to learn.
There are consequences for poor decisions and rewards for good ones.
There is nowhere to hide from challenges — but there is also a coach and a team there to help you work through them.
That makes Jiu Jitsu an incredibly powerful environment for mentoring young people.
Building a Model for Australian Schools
The success of Clear Path at Armadale Senior High School demonstrates what can happen when schools look beyond traditional approaches to student engagement.
Clear Path works alongside schools rather than simply running an external martial arts class.
Programs can incorporate student mentoring, structured Jiu Jitsu instruction, physical fitness, behaviour and engagement objectives, data collection and ongoing evaluation.
The goal is to create a program that contributes to the wider objectives of the school while giving students something they genuinely want to be part of.
What began as an alternative way to engage students has developed into a program capable of becoming part of the school's curriculum.
And we believe this is only the beginning.
Bringing Clear Path Jiu Jitsu to More Australian Schools
We want more young Australians to have access to the same opportunity.
Clear Path Jiu Jitsu is available to schools interested in using Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as part of their student engagement, wellbeing, physical education or mentoring programs.
Programs can be developed around the individual needs of a school and its students.
Whether the objective is increasing engagement, developing confidence, providing positive role models, improving resilience or simply introducing students to a sport they may never otherwise experience, we would love to start the conversation.
